Certain letterforms suggests symmetry but it's not, for example :
This uppercase letter, it can be seen that two different stroke weights of the Baskerville. It has a unique arc connecting the serif to the stem.
As you closely observe this uppercase letter form from Univers, the width on the left slope is thinner than the right stroke.
Both the lowercase letter forms, sans-serif Helvetica and Univers, by comparing both how the bowls meet the stems quickly and how the stems finishes.
The x-height generally describes the size of lowercase letter forms. Curved strokes such as 'S' must rise above the median or sink below the baseline in order to appear the same size as the others.

Week 6
We didn't had any lectures because we are focusing on the Project 1

Project 1
Week 5 - Week 6
I wasn't around during that week as I had some allergies, so I seek my classmates help on the project that we started on this week. I don't really know much on the assignment but I managed to complete my sketches and the three different layouts requested by Mr Vinod. My friend guided me and taught me how to use InDesign.
So, this is the first layout I did.

The fourth layout that I made by combining Layout 1 and 3
I refined it after the first round of feedbacks was given.
After that, I decided to go with this layout. But, I have to refine it again as it wasn't as balanced as it should be.
He gave me feedbacks on the previous one which was the shapes formed from the cover is not balanced if I were to imagine it. It supposed to look cleaner than this. So, I tried to apply his advice and got this outcome.

I was thinking of making the cover going one way because it means going one direction |

Feedback
Week 6
1. Eunice, your line-length looks too long. Also, where is your margins??? Your text is going right to the end of the page. 2. The right page is compositional weak, take all the text you have and if you black out and look at it against the white page it ends up having very awkward space. The black text must sit well against the white space. 3.Remember the headline shape must sit well against the white background. And must react well with the rest of the text.
Reflection
Experience
During Week 5, class was not too bad but I really do hope for longer breaks in between because my brain is seriously tired to process every single thing in one go for 6 hours. For Week 6, I managed to have the time to do my designs nicely.
Observation
Week 5, I realized that everyone has the same feeling with me about the class, it was too long and brain cracking. Week 6, I realized that I really need to patch up my designing skills eventhough it seems easy.
Findings
Week 5, class could have been better if it doesnt drag so long. Week 6, I should learn more on typography and become better.
Further Readings
3/5/2019 ( Week 5 )
This book is more towards on showing how artists creates typography using 3-D objects. For this part of the page, the artist Kalle Mattsson created 'Handwriting' alphabet in 2005 as part of a project. It was a continuation of the same project that resulted in the 'Backbreaker' letters. This project started when Kalle was watching a film and he was playing around with his hands in the light projected by the projector. Instead of creating shadows creatures, he discovered the unusual letters using negative space.
10/5/2019 (Week 6)
This book is about how to master type, so, I chose one of their subtitle 'Complementary Type Pairs'. It is important to create the right balance of elements to create a balanced visual tone using not only different sizes but also variety of fonts. It is said that majority of designs feature two fonts which are serif and sans serif. Providing a contrast is important but fonts too must complement each other. Two fonts that are dramatically different makes the type feel out of place and disconnected. So, it is important to make your choices readable and legible. To match them, look for similar qualities (e.g. x-height, weight, width, height, bias, counter sizes). Then, within the pair, see which looks better as the headline or the body copy.
