Lecture Notes

Week 5

For this week's class, we learned about Typographic Perception & Organization in terms of form and contrast of form, structure, texture and color, gestalt and layout where we learned about the gestalt laws in grouping, layout, visual hierarchy in size, typeface weight and pairing, color and tint, space and texture and composition.

Week 6

For this week's class, we learned about typographic composition in environmental where it is served as metaphorical purposes to bring awareness, environmental grids by abstracting a series of lines and shapes and alternative methods where it is beyond traditional grids

Week 7

For this week's class, we learned about static where it is used in print typo and screen typo, kinetic which is moving type where people applies motion to tell stories and environmental where they use architectural elements to show a message.

Instructions

Project 1

Week 5

We started our 1st project which is The Troublemakers Manifesto Colloquium, an academic conference so, we have to create a title cum key artwork and collateral.

Mr. Vinod instructed us to do a minimum of 5 designs and choose the top 3 to digitalize and expand the final chosen one. Firstly, I began by choosing different images that represented of what I think the word "Troublemakers" mean.

Then I chose 5 of the images and started to design the sketches.

Then, I digitalized the top 3 chosen ones

Then, I decided to go with Image 1 as my final and waiting for Mr.Vinod's feedback on it to see if I'm on the right track and to know how I can make it better in what way.

Week 6

After receiving Mr Vinod's feedback, I decided to change my image to show something much more positive outcome because according to what Mr.Vinod told us is that the "troublemakers" wants to bring a change.

Image 4

So, I decided to use that photo. I wanted to show like how people tend to not let designers bring out the best in them. Then, I showed Mr.Vinod but Mr.Shamsul told me that the image is not suitable as it looks like physical abuse instead. So, I changed my image again.

Image 5

Then, I did this to show my previous statement but Mr.Vinod told me to play with the image which I'm not sure how to make a difference in the image because if I were to remove something, it'll look very off. In conclusion, I don't think the image fits my style.

Image 6

After that, I changed my idea to "Creativity break through". So, the glass represents people who controls designers from being creative, so, it's like as if our creativity is breaking through. However, Mr.Vinod said that the typo is not happening but I'm not sure in what terms. While waiting for Mr.Vinod's feedback, I tried doing another one that matches the glass breaking.

Image 7
I made the word "TROUBLE" cracked as if they are showing that they are not here to create trouble. After receiving my feedbacks, I changed my composition.

Image 8
But according to Mr.Vinod, it doesn't have any design elements, which I don't really understand because isn't creativity a design element? So, I changed my fonts and replaced the glass to some inks.

After receiving Mr. Vinod's feedback, I changed my fist into something more painted instead of realistic. Then, I tighten up the space too.

Then I decided to reduced the amount of colours used and come out with this.

Week 8

Then Mr. Vinod said that it is not there yet and told me to change the typeface.

Then Mr. Vinod chose Image 15 and told me to make the words circled around the fist

Feedbacks

Week 6

Mr Vinod told me not to use a bombarded skull as it shows a negative vibe and not a positive outcome. Then he told me that my other design shows physical abuse instead of other meanings. He likes my composition.

Keep at it. It’s better than before. But try not to use your visuals directly. Meaning it’s someone else’s photograph. Explore variations halftone etc

The visual is acceptable with the word creativity. Try adding a half-tone effect or something like that. The typo is not happening-needs a lot of work.

Week 7

Mr Vinod told me to remove the part of the arm and draw the fist out, he also told me to make everything tightly together and not so much spacing. After that, he told me he wanted the fist to be in white outlined and paint it black until out of the outline in a fist shape.

You need to summarize the lecture of what you understand for the presentation. If you want to compile the presentation slide like what you're doing right now, make sure you have a clear caption of each lecture. For Finding Type exercise, you need to have all letter in 1 page on a baseline. Please follow the reference.

Week 8

Try making a circular ring around the fist. Try that choose and appropriate typeface from Google Fonts under Display catergory

Mr Shamsul said :

3rd photo : 'The' should be smaller than the word 'manifesto' , typeface used is suitable

1st photo : composition is fine but try to align the letters according to the same column vertically to make it look less messy and make the spacing closer to balance it out

2nd photo : he doesnt like it

Reflection

Experience

During week 5, I was actually excited for Project 1 because I had plans in mind on what to use and made a very nice image with a skull as background. Then in week 6, I felt very disappointed because I couldn't use that image as its negative so I tried hard to bring back that motivation to do it and make it as impressive as the first one. During week 7, I got very frustrated with Mr.Vinod because all of his feedback for me are very vague and I don't know what else to do to reach his expectations without further explanations and guidance.

Observations

During week 5, I realized that Mr. Vinod should tell us beforehand on what he wants from an image and what we should not use and other things in order to allow us to make it on time and not delay. In week 6, I realized that I should move on from it and get more inspired by what this manifesto means and during week 7, I realized that I should ask more detailed question and at the same time, Mr.Vinod should give a more specific feedback to give us an idea and also not too vague.

Findings

During week 5, I could have explore more on this manifesto and its visuals and getting inspired more. During week 6, I could have tried to think harder on design elements and on what to do. During week 7, I could have been more initiative in asking and at the same time do more designs for feedbacks.

Further Readings

Week 6

In this website that I read, by Canva. I did a short revision on what need to be considered in designing something.

20 rules are :

1. Proper kerning ( The ultimate goal of kerning is to ensure that the space between each letter is visually even to make for a neat and orderly piece of text )

2. Don’t disregard readability/legibility for aesthetic reasons ( eg. type size, not overusing capital letters)

3. Keep line lengths short

4. Hierarchy

5. Word spacing ( balanced )

6. Correct Alignment

7. Use grid (  A well-implemented grid is a bit like a fairy godmother, it can transform your design from something average to something clean, clear and effective. )

8. Avoid using widows and orphans ( widow is a term for a line of text that belongs to a paragraph and has moved over to the next column. An orphan is similar, but a single word on its own on a line, poor little thing.)

9. Use logical color palette

10. Use consistent font ( use fonts that complement each other)

11. Never use display fonts for body copy

12. Never stretch type

13. Avoid clashing colours

Week 7

What is good typography? Well, a good typography reinforces the meaning of its text instead of aesthetics. Good typography also falls in balance.
e.g.

it is readable and also balanced. Moreover, the fonts used are related to what the message is trying to say.
