Lecture Notes

Week 1

For this week's class, Mr Charles taught us more on the word 'Mythology' and guided us on how to create our proposal by giving us some guidelines.

Week 2

For this week's class we learnt about the history of a painting called Caravaggio's Narcissus where the story behind is from the Greek myth of Narcissus, a handsome but cruel youth who falls in love with his own reflection and wastes away. Caravaggio's treatment of this scene uses his characteristic tenebrism to obscure the background in darkness, leaving nothing but the youth and his reflection. And because the Greek Gods pitied over his death, they turned him into a type of flower.

We also learnt about the deeper meaning of culture and how it affects around us.

Project 1 - Proposal

Week 1

For this week's class, we are grouped into a few groups of 4 people so me, Daryl, Jon and Jia Hui were grouped together and we decided to list down our ideas for the topic 'Mythology' for our Japan Intercultural trip.

Here are our ideas and we decided to go for Yo Kai. However, Ms Anis told us to learn more about the background and history for Yo Kai and look for evidences that the Japanese still believes about them until now and why are the Yo Kai are believed in the first place.

Week 2

We did our presentation slides based on Yokai and we proposed a few topic ideas on what we wanted to talk about to Mr. Charles. We also showed our problem statement, research questions and ideas.

However, Mr.Charles felt that it's still not there yet and our problem statement isn't really a problem statement. So, he helped and guided us through by figuring out what our plan is and how we should write our problem statement. He also discussed with us on what we should be focusing on and how our research should work and relate to our Japan trip and Yokai to make it easier for us.

So, this is what I got from our discussion :

This was our presentation slide :

Week 3

Then, we proceeded on refining our Research Proposal for the presentation.

Week 4

We presented our Research Proposal to our lecturers. They gave us a few feedbacks and suggestions on what to focus on during the trip or data to collect.

Week 5

For this entire week, we went to Japan for our data collection. We visited a lot of places such as Teamlab Borderless, Meiji Jingu Shrine and museums like Mori Art and Design 21-21. Our main focus was on Akihabara because that area is famous for their rich in manga and anime culture.

This is what we took when we were in one of the manga stores :

Week 6

After we came back from the trip, my groupmate Jonathan created a vlog on the trip and we did our Data Collection slides to present on Thursday.

Here is the vlog :

Then, we presented our Data Collection slides and our lecturers were impressed with what we have found and on our project ideas. Ms. Anis told us to go for the triptych idea and Mr.Charles told us the comic is little bit time consuming as we have to draw a lot of things and dialogs within a week or two.

Week 7 - submission date (2/3/2019)

Then, we proceeded to our final project outcome. We started out sketching our ideas out first and Daryl helped to refine it because it was a little bit too distorted and the style doesn't really fit.

Then, I start to outline the sketch that Jonathan did and then Jia Hui is in charge of the colouring while Daryl is in charge of the background. Daryl did a few refining too to make it look nicer.

Then, we printed them out and stick it onto a mounting board.

Here is the final look of the product and how it works.

Here is the final slides compilation of Project 1 until progression of our final product.
