Lecture Notes
Week 1
We were briefed on what we were going to do for the whole semester and our class was started with a short presentation by 4 groups. Today, we've learned about Typographic Design System. It consists of axial, radial, dilatational, random, grid, modular, transitional and bilateral.
Week 2
Since it was public holiday, we didn't had any lecture but exercise checking
Week 3
For this week, we didn't have any lectures but exercise checking and feedback giving
Week 4
We have no class today since it's another public holiday
Instructions
Exercises
For our first exercise, we were told to do 2 designs of each of the typographic systems for the whole week.
This is my rough sketch for my typographic system

Week 2
For this exercise I searched some photos that I can spot some letters. So, I chose this image :

Then, I began outlining some main parts of it

Then, I began comparing it to the fonts given by Mr Vinod and chose ITC Garamond Std as an inspiration.

Week 4
For this week, we are doing on Type & Image, so, I started to look for headlines that are short and something meaningful. And since we didn't had class, I wasn't too sure on what we are supposed to do so, I created this to start out.

| Image 1.1 |

| Image 2.2 |
I chose Image 2.2 instead because I feel like it holds more meaning to it as if the girl is trying to shine. I also made another one to explore more. So, I searched for another headline which is "Do What Makes Your Soul Shine"

After receiving feedbacks, I tried to add some characteristics of the image into the words, but it's still very basic.

Then, I edited again to add some reflections but I couldn't decide between which one should I choose as my final.

Week 5
I did some refining on my exercises after receiving my feedbacks. So, I added a slight motion blur effect to the background and made my word 'LIGHT' glow and also added a bit of motion blur to slightly match the background.

Feedback
Week 2
Mr Vinod said that my Radial should be focusing on one point and not two separate ones, while my Modular should be using a balanced grid inside of one part two boxes and one part one.
Week 3
The letters should be smoother and not too jagged as the original photo's look is much more smooth. Keep the elements from the original.
Week 4
That’s good, because you are attempting to integrate the text and image. But you need to do more, for it to become one. Study the image, what is the characteristic of the image, where can I inject that character into the text... It is fine to use different colours but keep it at a minimum.
Hmmmm you have just made it slight transparent ... if you look at the lights it’s not even... spots of light: so perhaps the words will also have spots of reflected light on its surface. Presently It’s still quite basic.
Week 5
Make the words like the lights in the background or try to create a bokeh effect. For the type & play, try to make it more slimy and more smooth like the letter M's middle.
Reflection
Experience
During week 1, I was pretty okay with class because it was just like a normal day as I'm used to the class and I expected what is going to happen. But I was a bit surprised because we have to do our own impromptu presentation for the lecture. During week 2, I became more understanding on Modular because at first, I got a bit frustrated because I don't know what count as Modular. During week 3, I was a bit confused because I don't know what images should I use to find my letters and I kind of got a bit stressed out because I got scared if my lecturers can't see the letters that I see from the image. During week 4, I didn't have class. During week 5, I got a bit anxious because I didn't have class last week so I didn't know if I did well or not and I had to rushed after receiving the amount of feedbacks and the class is moving on into the next project.
Observations
During week 1, I realized that doing our own presentations is a normal thing to do so, i shouldn't be shocked about it. During week 2, I realized that Modular is actually quite easy than I thought it should be. During week 3, images doesn't really matter as long as you like what you are doing and your creative imagination on what does the image look like in terms of letters. During week 4, I realized, I procrastinated a lot from the holiday. During week 5, having certain doubts is fine but not until it comes to a point where it drags you down.
Findings
During week 1, I could have been more well prepared for the sudden impromptu presentations. During week 2, I could have looked into details on what Modular is and compared them to the examples instead of following based on my understandings. During week 3, I could have just follow my own ways in doing my work as it is my work and not my lecturer's and I should not overthink about my lecturer's thoughts on it. During week 4, I didn't learn much as it was public holiday but I do know is that you can easily get left out even if its just a day of holiday. During week 5, I shouldn't not overthink on this and not to try too hard to be perfect instead, I should learn from mistakes instead of being scared of failures.
Further Reading
Week 1
The book called "Mastering Type" by Denise Bosler. In this chapter, I read about designing with sentences. The subtopic is headlines. So, every designer have to advertise in the best possible way which is including a type that goes well with an image and headlines are very crucial in an advertisement. It should compel a reader to take action like buying a product or request a service. Alignment, size of type, choice of typeface, colour and placement will determine a headline's impact. The arrangement too needs consideration in a way where a headline breaks affects readability.
Week 2
This book is called "Art Direction" by Nik Mahon. In this chapter, we will learn about using type to enhance an advertising message. Certain typefaces can affect an audience perception and each of them have their own personality and can also express different moods and meanings. Typography can become an image itself . Examples range from the more conventional 'headline only' to something more elaborate where multiple or single words are crafted to depict an image.
Week 3
This book is called "Thinking with Type" by Ellen Lupton. In this chapter, we will learn about hierarchy where how it expresses the organization of contents by emphasizing some elements. IT helps readers to scan a text. Emphasizing a word or phrase within a body of text usually requires only one signal. Italics is the standard form of emphasis.
