Final Project

Week 11

I started out by deciding on what to do on by thinking of greeting cards and then, I thought of those ugly digital greeting cards and asked Mr. Vinod about it. He told me not to use greeting cards as it is not important anymore.

Then, I remembered that Malaysian government always put up shitty anti-drug posters so I decided to create a better one. So, I searched for some shitty posters made that are related to drugs to get some inspiration and to find out why is it bad.

After that, I asked Mr.Vinod for feedbacks and he told me not to recreate just the poster only but also to understand that its the typography that made the poster looks bad. So, he told me to make a typeface for the agency itself to use in their anti-drug posters.

Then, I did my idea proposal to start the foundation before moving on further. The idea proposal is also for me to refer every time when I lost track on what's my main purpose.

After that, I started to do my font design starting by sketching out roughly on the original font which is "Overpass" typeface.

Week 12

After receiving my feedbacks, I proceeded to combine the elements which are the powder and desperation effect together and continuing my font designing process. So, I choose the letter A to test out my design ideas.

Then, I decided to go for the first top left because I feel like that looks nicer compare to the others because I felt like the others looks like bacteria or something.

Then, I started to develop my fonts in Fontlab after that on campus on Friday.

Then, I start to test it out on AI to see how it goes and it turned out like this.

After that, I start to re-design the poster that started to inspire me in the first place and came out with these.

Poster 2

After receiving my feedbacks, I refined my poster as Mr.Vinod wanted me to focus more on the headlines and not the visual elements as my typeface shows a lot of elements.

Then, Mr.Vinod told me to use different headlines but the same position as he doesn't want to keep changing the positions, at the most is switching places. So, I used 5 different headlines but the same position and the same logo size. He also doesn't want any colors.

Feedbacks

Week 10
No feedbacks given because I haven't started anything

Week 11
Mr Vinod told me to invent a font for Agensi Antidadah with just the uppercase letters, . and , and numbers 0-9. Then he told me that posters are shit because of its typography so, he told me to create a font that reflects the agency or drugs itself. So, it is enhancing the font, not the poster which I have to provide a consistent font for the poster.

Week 12
Mr Vinod likes the powder effect font but he also likes the desperation shown on the other font I created. So, he told me to try and combine both of the fonts and try to do the outline of the wriggly lines (desperation) on the powder effect to see how it goes. Then, he adviced me to test on one letter first before proceeding designing the others.

Then, I showed him my designs and he likes both of the fonts which was the powder effect behind the letter with the wriggly lines on the letter and the other one which is the powder font with the wriggly lines on the letter. So, I chose the first one because I find that its easier for me to do within the short amount of time and Mr Vinod heard what I said and he told me that he'll give me easy marks jokingly.

Reflection

Experience

During week 10, I got slightly frustrated because I couldn't get any inspirations so I jotted down some ideas on what I can consider or what shitty posters I've seen in my life. During week 11, it has been a smooth week for me since, I've got an idea on what I'm doing and I've pre-researched on the fonts I can create for the agency and what kind of elements I should put in. During week 12, I was feeling exhausted as my time management wasn't good as I have to balance out between all my final projects.

Observations

During week 10, I kind of gave up on forcing myself to get inspirations so I let time to pass first while I stay calm. During week 11, I felt very happy as finally I got a smooth week for my assignments as I managed to went through without failure. Then during week 12, I crammed up a lot of my assignments to the very end except for my Interactive Design as I know I need a long time to do it. So, cramming up had caused my lack of sleep for the entire week.

Findings

During week 10, I think I should not force myself as it'll make me not feel like I want to do my assignments. During week 11, I'm actually proud of myself as I can see lots of improvements from myself as I reflected back on all the lessons I've learned. During week 12, I think I should manage my time wisely like the old days as I've faced too much sleepless night until my sleeping schedule gotten messed up pretty badly.

Further Readings

Week 11

Chapter 1: Minimal

In this chapter, the author highlights the importance of keeping things simple but still maintaining that interesting layout. A concept that resonates greatly with the old saying "Less is More". A great designer Massimo Vignelli has a theory that we only need twelve good typefaces to create an intriguing layout. This has to do with minimizing our choice of type that might clutter the layout. The typefaces he refers to can be searched online for "Massimo Vignelli Twelve". Furthermore, this chapter also examines the aspects of an existing design.

Week 12

5 Reasons Why Typography is Powerful
link : https://bigfishpresentations.com/2013/01/09/5-reasons-why-typography-is-powerful/

1.  It attracts and holds attention of a person
- This means that a typography is able to convey feelings or moods which can help a person to understand what message you are trying to send.

2. It is reader friendly
- Clean fonts are easier to read and is the key to every presentation. If font that are small and cramped up together, the presentation might be ignored by many. It is fun to have a cool and complex project, but the audience should be able to easily comprehend what your presentation is saying.

3. It establishes information hierarchy
- By using different font sizes and types of font, the audience can determine the most important points of your presentation just by looking at it which can help in giving a smooth flow for the reader.

4. It creates harmony
- Typography used throughout a presentation unifies it. Repetition of the same font in your presentation creates continuity and simplicity.

5. Creates and builds recognition
- The fonts you use in your presentation are the visuals that your audience will remember most. You want your audience to be able to recognize your company’s brand at any place or time.
